Sacrament of Baptism

It has been the consistent and traditional practice of the Roman Catholic Church to officiate the sacrament of Baptism to infants. Parents very naturally want to pass along their tradition and faith to their child and the values that flow from that faith; baptism marks the beginning of this tradition and faith life. Parents of a child to be baptized must be registered, active members of St. George’s Catholic Cathedral Southwark. If you are not already registered, you may do so by contacting the Parish Office. We recommend that you contact the baptism preparation team to the birth of your child, so that you have time to properly prepare for this very special event. Godparents and parents are welcomed and encouraged to attend Baptism Preparation classes. The sacrament of Baptism is celebrated on Saturdays and Sundays (Saturday 1-3 P. M, Sunday 3-4 P.M) For arrangements of Baptism please contact us and come along for a meeting (usually on first Mondays of the month between 7-8 P.M). We will do our best to help you.

preparation sessions: In order to help parents who want baptism for infants to clarify and deepen your reasons for bringing your child to Baptism, you will be invited to two preparation sessions

GODPARENTS: Godparents must be baptised and confirmed Catholics who are committed to sharing their faith with their godchild. They must be an adult (at least 16 years of age) capable of supporting the child in his/her Christian faith.

Registration It is a historical event for your child, and his/her name to be entered in the baptismal book in the same form as in the civil register. Your child’s name will be written in Cathedral’s baptismal register.

In order to help parents who want baptism for infants to clarify and deepen your reasons for bringing your child to Baptism, you will be invited to two preparation sessions, which will include
  • an explanation of the Rite of Baptism, its signs and symbols
  • an opportunity to reflect on how you will bring your child up in the faith
  • an opportunity to explore how you will bring your child up to keep God’s commandments and how the Christian community can and will support you.
  • Parents of children to be baptised are asked to profess their faith and to accept the responsibility of introducing the child to the Christian way of life. This presumes an active faith life and regular participation in Sunday Eucharist by at least one of the parents. We are ready to help anyone requesting the baptism of their child where this presumption is absent.
